By helping to raise awareness of the LGBTQIA+ community, their achievements and their ongoing battles,
we help reduce social stigma,
provide essential education to the wider community, shine a spotlight on the very real issues faced by the LGBTQIA+ community such as bullying, violence, isolation and suicide rates, while creating a safe and supportive space for LGBTQIA+ peoples of all ages.
Up to 11 in 100 Australians may have a diverse sexual orientation, sex or gender identity. In a population of almost 250 000 in Ipswich, that means there are
approximately 27 500 queer people, right here in your community.
CONSENSUAL SEX BETWEEN
SAME-SEX ADULTS IS ILLEGAL IN 76 COUNTRIES.
Punishments range from fines and imprisonment, to the death penalty.
LGBTQIA+ people still face hate and violence. >70% of LGBTI people in Australia said they had experienced violence, harassment or bullying based on their sexual orientation, gender or intersex status.
Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people are 3x more likely to experience
depression.
LGBTI people in our country still hide their sexuality or gender identity: 42% hide at social and community events, 39% hide at work.
2021 Australian Census failed to include variables on sex, gender, sexual orientation and variations of sex characteristics. Amnesty International says the census’s lack of appropriate questions capturing LGBTIQ+ communities and experiences “will result in a service gap that constitutes discrimination of the LGBTQIA+ community".
LGBTIQ+ young people, aged 16-27, are
5x more likely to have attempted suicide. Transgender people, aged 14-25 are 15x more likely to have attempted suicide.
